The Ultimate Guide to Solving Common Fuel Injector
August 27, 2024

Fuel injectors play a crucial role in the modern diesel engine's operation. They finely spray fuel to mix with incoming air before reaching the combustion chamber. When this is working properly, the engine will perform more efficiently, however, if there is a problem with the fuel injector, the performance of the vehicle will suffer. Understanding common fuel injector problems will help you provide your customers with the correct parts the first time.

In modern vehicles with multi-point fuel injection, each cylinder has its own injector. This ensures a precise air/fuel ratio crucial for optimal efficiency, but if it fails to function correctly, this balance can be disrupted, affecting the engine's performance.

In this article we will discuss:

  • Common Fuel Injector Problems
  • Signs that Fuel Injectors are Failing
  • Causes of Bad Fuel Injectors
  • Engine Codes for Faulty Fuel Injectors
  • Solution to Common Fuel Injector Problems

Common Fuel Injector Problems

  • Clogging: Buildup of carbon debris and dirt can accumulate if not properly maintained or cleaned leading to uneven fuel distribution, engine misfires, and inefficient engine performance.
  • Failing Sensors: Faulty wires and connectors may have been damaged due to using a low-quality part incapable of handling high heat, or due to improper installation. This leads to engine misfires, rough idling, and poor performance.
  • Leakage: Seals may have been improperly installed causing the seal to dry up and crack.  This results in poor fuel economy, a bad fuel smell, and if not addressed, it could even lead to engine fires.

Listen to Robert Isherwood, CEO of AMBAC International discuss these problems in episode 201 of The Heavy Duty Parts Report.

Failure Ahead

Signs that Fuel Injectors are Failing

Difficulty in Starting: It may indicate there’s not enough fuel delivery for combustion, resulting from decreased fuel pressure needed for combustion causing the vehicle to not start.

Rough/Stalling Engine While Idling: If the vehicle did start but the revolutions per minute (RPM) is below the optimal level, it leads to shaky or rough idling in the vehicle due to lack of fuel power. If the RPM falls too low, the engine might even shut off.

Bad Smell While Idling: Fuel leaks from damaged injectors or seals can produce a noticeable fuel odor during idling, indicating improper fuel combustion. Additionally, faulty sensors or fuel lines may contribute to the smell.

Fuel Leaks: Aging injectors may develop faults or holes, leading to fuel leakage from the injector body. Damaged seals can also contribute to fuel leaks, visible as traces of fuel on the injector's surface or fuel rail.

Engine Vibration/Cylinder Misfire: When a faulty injector does not deliver fuel to a specific cylinder, it can result in engine vibration or misfires. Further inspection may be necessary to confirm the injector's role in causing the vibration.

Causes of Bad Fuel Injectors

Improper Installation: If the fuel injector is not installed correctly, it may not deliver fuel efficiently or may become damaged over time due to misalignment or improper seating.

Poor Fuel Performance: Low-quality or contaminated fuel can clog or damage the injector nozzles, leading to inefficient fuel delivery and potentially even cause injector failure.

Overheating: If the injector is clogged or dirty, the engine might run lean and overheat, damaging the fuel injector and affecting its ability to spray fuel accurately.

Fuel Contamination: Contaminants such as dirt, debris, or water in the fuel system can clog the injector nozzles or cause corrosion, resulting in erratic fuel spray patterns and injector malfunction.

Engine Codes for Faulty Fuel Injectors

The engine code for fuel injector issues can vary depending on the specific make and model of the vehicle.

  • P0201 – Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 1
  • P0202 – Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 2
  • P0203 – Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 3
  • P0204 - Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 4
  • P0205 – Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 5
  • P0206 - Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 6
  • P0207 – Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 7
  • P0208 - Fuel Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 8

These codes show that there are issues to be addressed with electrical circuits. If you are inexperienced with these codes, it is best to consult a mechanic to ensure that fuel injectors are still at their best performance.

Solutions to Common Fuel Injector Problems

Ensuring proper maintenance, regular inspection, and cleaning are paramount to preventing clogs and leaks, and maintaining optimal fuel injector performance. By proactively addressing these issues, you can safeguard your vehicle's fuel delivery system and avoid potential problems such as rough idling, poor acceleration, and engine stalling.

Regularly cleaning the fuel system, using injector cleaner additives, and replacing clogged injectors as needed can help maintain efficient fuel delivery. Additionally, inspecting and replacing seals with high-quality parts, ensuring proper lubrication and installation, can prevent leaks, support fuel injector integrity, and consistent engine performance. By prioritizing these preventive measures, you can prolong the lifespan of your fuel injectors and keep your vehicle running smoothly.
